The Endocannabinoid System: CBD Unlocking the Mystery, Vol. II
A Brief Explanation of ‘Tea Ache Sea’
In our last installment, we discussed the Endocannabinoid system (ECS) and briefly touched on its role in our bodies, along with how it works. This round, let’s get a little more into the weeds (giggity) and discuss how our favorite compounds of the cannabis plant can play a role in this system’s functions.
We’ll be largely focusing on CBD, since well, it’s the legal one, not to mention our specialty, but first, let’s quickly touch on THC just to make sure we have the full picture.
THC: The ECS Doppelganger
THC’s molecular structure strikingly similar to that of the endocannabinoids your body produces (anandamide and AG-2). So much, so, in fact, that it can bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors directly, though not with the same precision or quality. Along with the molecular structure, THC also mirrors your endocannabinoids’ effects; help with appetite, improved mood, pain relief, et al. However, there is a rub, and that is that too much can produce the opposite; nausea, dizziness, anxiety, and basically anything else you can think of from that one time you smoked too much at a frat party.
It's Not all Roses, Sunshine and Rick and Morty Episodes
Many researchers caution that THC may act as a “down-regulator,” meaning that it’s so similar in structure to our natural compounds that it could cause our bodies to stop producing what is necessary, thereby creating a deficiency. Ultimately, more research is needed before drawing a conclusion, and considering all the evidence for THC’s benefits, both scientific and anecdotal, we’re inclined to believe the positives outweigh the negatives.
CBD’s interaction, on the other hand, is an entirely different beast; subtle, nuanced and infinitely complex. We’ll get into that more with our next installment.
